Ceiling Mold Removal & Remediation

What Causes Ceiling Mold?

Removing the mold on your ceiling could require just a few wipes, or it could require gutting and remediation. It may be surface mold, which you can see and is only on the surface of the ceiling. Or the mold could be the tip of the iceberg, where there is also mold behind the ceiling that you cannot see. The mold may come from moist air inside the room (like in a bathroom or kitchen), or it may come from an undetected leak above the ceiling (like if there’s an upper-floor bathroom or kitchen).

Ceiling mold is common, though it’s more common on some surfaces than on others.  Mold is most likely to grow on:

  • Drywall ceilings, especially those with poor or low-gloss paint jobs. By the way, mold can grow on both sides of the drywall, because drywall absorbs so much water.

  • Plaster ceilings

  • Drop ceilings

  • Wooden ceilings

  • Faux-wood MDF ceilings

Removing Ceiling Mold

Mold is especially tough to remove on and around crown molding where it can get into little crevices and stay there. You probably could take a chunk out of the mold by wiping it away, but even that can be a risky proposition. You probably can’t reach all of it easily, and you will probably need to get up on a ladder or step stool that’s just tall enough for you to get hurt if you fall down. Also, the texture of the ceiling material or the sheen of the paint may be such that you can’t wipe away the mold, at least without ruining the finish.

Most of all, it’s hard to know whether you’ve taken care of what caused the mold in the first place - which is a water or moisture or water issue. All mold is caused by water. .  Mold can keep coming back if you do not fix the water problem.

If you can see the mold, there’s probably no need for mold testing.  We can do it, but it’s probably unnecessary because once you see visible mold, you just need to remove it. Knowing what type of mold you have does not change how we remove it. Save your money on testing and just use it for removing it..  The main task now is just to find all of the mold and fix the water issue.

Finding all the mold requires knowing exactly where to look.  Moldman has seen it all.  We can tell you pretty quickly whether it’s a ventilation issue or there’s a hidden source of moisture (and mold).  Often we’ll look inside of the ceiling to see whether there’s more mold above, and what might be causing it.  If the moldy ceiling is right below an attic, we’ll look in the attic for the source of the mold.
